Pendragon Windfarm plans to go on show

Plans for the Pendragon Windfarm, on the mountains between Blaina and Blaenavon will go on display next week.

The company behind the plan to produce enough clean energy for the equivalent of 20,000 homes, Pennant Wind Energy Ventures Ltd, will hold exhibitions at Abertillery, Blaenavon, Blaina and Brynmawr.

The company is proposing to build 24 wind turbines and will deliver up to £4 million for community benefits, as well as donating a large tract of land to the World Heritage Site at Blaenavon. A planning application is under consideration by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council.

Pennant Wind says that the site, on Mynydd James, Cefn Coch and Coity mountains, is ideally suited for energy production as it is very windy, a considerable distance away from existing homes and will not affect its current use as grazing land.

Pennant Wind managing director Dale Hart said, "The windfarm will help to meet Welsh targets for renewable energy production and benefit the environment by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases produced from other energy sources. We have produced detailed studies showing it will have very limited impact on the local environment. We will take all reasonable measures to minimise the visual impact and there will be no need for new electricity pylons."

He continued, "We want to keep local people fully informed of the plans. We have already distributed leaflets, and we have had many good suggestions of how surrounding communities may benefit during the lifetime of the windfarm. If anyone needs more information, we hope they will come along to one of the exhibitions."

Mr Hart said suggestions of how the money could be spent include:

  • New nature reserves and bird watching facilities
  • A 'green energy' education centre for local schools
  • Improved footpaths, walkways and cycle routes through the Ebbw Fach
  • New public works of art
  • A weather station for environmental studies, and
  • Supporting existing projects and initiatives.

The exhibition can be seen at:

  • Abertillery - Ebenezer Church, Park Place, on Monday 2nd February, from 2.30pm to 8pm
  • Blaenavon - Blaenavon Workman's Hall, on Tuesday 3rd February, from 2pm to 8pm
  • Blaina - St Peter's Church, Station Road, on Thursday 5th February, from 2.30pm to 8pm, and
  • Brynmawr - St Mary's Church, Somerset Road, on Saturday 7th February, from 10am to 4pm.

The Welsh Assembly Government has set a target of producing 10 per cent of energy consumption in Wales from renewable sources, such as windfarms, by 2010.
