The UK has some of the highest average wind speeds of any country in Europe. Average wind speed is one of the most critical factors in economic development of wind power projects, since the amount of energy that can be extracted from the wind increases with the cube of its speed (in other words, double the wind speed and you can get eight times as much energy from it).

Renewable energy sources in the UK generate 3% of the total electricity, and wind accounts for about 10% of this. There are currently 74 grid connected wind farms in the UK. The government has set targets for electricity generation of 5% from renewables by 2003 and 10% by 2010. Wind energy projects will almost certainly account for a large part of this increase.
